Study shows direct link between second hand cigarette smoke and memory loss reports YourECigarette.com

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 19, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Studies are being conducted at Northumbria University, warning that memory loss in adults could be a side-effect of second-hand smoke.

The works of psychologists Dr. Tom Heffernan and Dr. Terrence O’Neil were published in the peer-reviewed journal Addiction. The finding compared groups of second-hand smokers, current smokers and non-second-hand-smokers. Here, participants took part of a common memory test, CAMPROMPT, or Cambridge Prospective Memory Test.

Current smokers were the worst off when it came to engaging memory by a large margin. They recalled approximately 25-30% less than their non-exposed counterparts in event-and time-based tasks. Researchers also observed that those exposed to secondhand smoke developed a time-based memory gap. They recalled 15% less than their non-exposed partners. Interestingly enough, memory did not seem to be affected by event-based tasks.

There are many compelling questions that came up during the study. The biggest question was just how secondhand smoke affected memory loss on a neurological level. Another question comes up about “thirdhand” smoke and if it affects people in a similar, yet smaller, way. Thirdhand smoke is where smoke is absorbed into walls where heavy smoking takes place

Along with memory loss, there have been previous studies which have shown the correlation of tobacco smoking and brain damage. There are other studies out there that show how smoking reduces brain activity in teens, as well as how it links to different cancers.

Although researchers are not sure how the process works regarding memory loss and secondhand smoke, it’s imperative that people should be careful of what they inhale The is especially true with such compelling evidence that smoke could cause damage to memory and have other completely adverse effects.
