(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 09, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Researchers, according to news-medical.net, report that people with a good level of physical fitness in middle age show relatively lower and late symptoms of chronic conditions in old age than people with low level physical fitness.
According to Jarett Berry, author of the study, being fit means that you are delaying the inevitable problems and diseases of old and are actually lowering the onset of diseases as well.
Berry and other fellow researchers studied 18,670 fit middle aged individuals for 26 years to examine the combined incidence of eight chronic conditions. Those conditions were ; congestive heart failure , ischemic heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease,Alzheimer's disease, and colon or lung cancer.
These participants were divided into Quintiles according to fitness levels.
According to archives of internal medicine , men and women who were in the top quintile of fitness showed lower signs of chronic diseases than the people in the lowest quintile of fitness. They found out that each 1 metabolic equivalent increase in physical fitness reduced the risks of developing disease by 5% and in women it was 6%.
According to co authors and fellow researchers at the University of Texas Benjamin Willis, this study focuses on the relationship between fitness in middle life and quality of life in later years. To add to the existing observational research such as the one mentioned, there are a huge number of clinical trials that are required to define both the advantages and problems of that have been displayed in all observational researches to be linked with extension in both the quality of an individual’s health and longevity.
