Segmentation: Global HLA Typing Transplant Diagnostics Services Market

Global HLA Typing Transplant Diagnostics Services Market By Technology (Polymerase Chain Reaction {PCR-SSP, PCR SSOP, PCR-SBT}, Next-Generation Sequencing), End-User (Hospitals, Transplant Centers, Specialty Clinics, Academic Institutes), Geography (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, Middle East & Africa) – Industry Trends and Forecast to 2025

Drivers: Global HLA Typing Transplant Diagnostics Services Market

The major factors driving the growth of this market are technological advancements in HLA typing, increasing number of solid organ and stem cell transplantation procedures, risen research grants, funds, and public-private investments are boosting the growth of the global HLA typing transplant diagnostics services market.

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN HLA TYPING

The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) compound comprises of the polymorphic genes in the human genome. The latest and advanced techniques such as next generation sequencing (NGS) technology have been evolved as an alternative method for sequence based typing (SBT). The advantage of NGS comprises of single strand sequencing nature, which combines the increased amount of sequencing reads in each sample and locus. The most significant property of NGS technologies includes a large amount of clonal sequences generation in a single sequencing run. The significant advancement in NGS makes it a great potential to overcome traditional sequencing based HLA typing, and ultimately resulted in ground-breaking changes in HLA typing transplant diagnostics services.

The Roche 454 GS Junior, the Illumina Miseq and the Ion Torrent system have recently developed advanced NGS platform for HLA typing.
In February 2016, GenDx received CE-IVD approval for the NGSengine software. The software provides the analysis of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing using the method of next-generation sequencing. This software can be used with the MiSeq of Illumina, IonTorrent PGM of Thermo Fisher, and Pacific Biosciences’ PacBio RSII devices. Apart from reviewing and reporting option, the software can also be used for whole gene representation, automatic allele assignment and multi loci analysis, and the genotyping of multiple HLA loci.

In December 2015, Immucor, Inc. in collaboration with Sirona Genomics launched the MIA FORA NGS, which is a high resolution HLA typing solution. This NGS system provides complete coverage of 11 types of HLA genes. The system can be operated manually or it can be automated.

According to a study published in National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the SBT method has become more advanced as it uses an ABI Prism 3700 DNA analyzer; these are developed for high throughput production of sequence data through highly automated operation. The ABI Prism 3700 DNA Analyzer is an advanced 96-capillary electrophoresis instrument with the capability of running four 96-well plates back to back in a sixteen-hour period. The data from the machine can produce Class I sequences for A or B loci for 64 samples in the given time frame.

High-throughput HLA genotyping using NGS have been reported by several companies. The new technologies emerging in the market are driving the growth of the global HLA typing transplantation diagnostics services market.

INCREASING NUMBER OF SOLID ORGAN AND STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION PROCEDURES

Organ transplantation is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or missing organ is removed and replaced with a functioning organ from other body (Donor). The location of the donor and recipient may vary. The organs can also be transported from a donor site to another location. Some of the statistics for solid organ and stem transplantation are mentioned below:

• According to Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, 92 transplants are taking place per year in the U.S.

• According to a study published in American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC), there were 18,048 kidney transplants performed in the United States in the year 2012.

• According to a data published in Statista, 126,670 organ transplantations occurred in 2015 across the globe.

• As per news published in Time Inc., approximately 34,768 organ transplantations were performed in 2017 including organs from deceased as well as living donors.

• Rising number of solid organ and stem cell transplantation procedures leads to higher number of transplant organs by HLA typing treatment leading to growth of the market.

INCREASED RESEARCH GRANTS, FUNDS, AND PUBLIC-PRIVATE INVESTMENTS

The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules, by the genes are present at the 3.6 Mb region on the chromosome. Genotyping of the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) is performed for the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells or organs.

For instance, the U.S. government has planned to invest USD 200.0 million for shortening the list of patients waiting for the organ transplants.
According to a publication in Department of Health and Human Services, the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health has invited the applications for suggesting basic, translational, clinical, and epidemiological. And the research results on the solid organ transplant (SOT) in older persons have been raised.

The increasing government funding and initiatives have helped many patients to receive better treatments, with increase in the HLA typing transplantations in the market for the forecast period.
