(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 18, 2012 ) New York, NY -- Five months after being suspended by The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) star Chris Leben is thankful.
After his November 2011 loss to fellow MMA fighter Mark Munoz, Chris Leban tested positive for painkillers and was issued a one year suspension by the UFC . After being issued that suspension, Mr. Leben knew that he had to get into a rehab program in order to conquer his addictions. Chris Leben admitted to having continual problems with both painkillers and alcohol throughout his entire life and confessed to using them for both physical and emotional pain. While he admits to being embarrassed, he believes that being caught was one of the best things to happen to him.
“Athletes can walk a dangerous line with painkillers,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Repetitive injuries often times do necessitate the use of pain killers for an athlete. However, as Mr. Leben admitted, those painkillers can be addictive, and an individual can become addicted to them. And, that’s when it becomes a problem. Thankfully, Mr. Leben made the decision to get into rehab and has the backing of the UFC as well as the support of his friends, family, and fans. We wish him continued success in his recovery.”
