UK research indicates young adults underestimate alcohol quantities says Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 02, 2012 ) Washington, DC -- An interesting study out of the United Kingdom that focuses on the ability of young adults to estimate quantities of alcohol in a glass or being poured from a bottle, revealed a concern: young adults grossly underestimate alcohol quantities when pouring a drink.

Each participant in the study was asked to pour what he or she considered to be his or her normal drink in terms of quantity. The second portion of the study asked the participants to estimate just how many units were in that particular drink. The study revealed that nearly sixty-six percent of participants significantly underestimated exactly how many units were in their drink.

“This study conducted in the UK brings up some valid talking points for America,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Young adults, regardless of where they live, aren’t much different when it comes to underestimating or overestimating quantities of alcohol. I think that many American young adults would have the same difficulty if asked to participate in a similar study. When educating teens and young adults about the dangers of drinking it may be wise to physically demonstrate alcohol quantities through interactive pouring activities using clear water and colored water. The discrepancies between perceived acceptable alcohol consumption and actual alcohol consumption would, most likely, be shown to vary greatly. By having direct interaction, we’d be able to reinforce the dangers of drinking even small quantities of alcohol.”
Underage drinking is a problem facing the world today.
