Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center Says New Treatment for Cocaine Addiction May be on the Horizon

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 05, 2012 ) New York, NY -- Irish researchers may have discovered a new tool for the addiction field that predicts the likelihood of a cocaine addict to relapse.

The study, conducted by researchers from National University of Ireland, Maynooth, focuses on a psychological test consisting of a questionnaire that, they say, identifies which addicts will seek treatment and then return with traces of cocaine in their system. The questions asked center on the addicted individualÂ’s thoughts about craving cocaine as well as the consequences from its use. The answers to the questions indicate whether or not the individual has a positive feeling about his or her addiction and, if they do, the research indicates that the chance for relapse is significantly higher.

“This study seems to be an unbiased approach of getting to the heart of the addicted individual’s issues,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “The questions seem to illicit feelings, beliefs and thoughts that may otherwise be hidden when an addicted individual presents for treatment. It’s interesting to see empirical data that supports something Mountainside has felt all along and that goes hand in hand with our holistic approach to addiction treatment: what an individual thinks and feels does matter in his/her recovery process.”

The study, which will be published in this month's The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, was conducted by a team of international psychologists and involved a group of 25 individuals who were addicted to cocaine and who were enrolled in a six-month outpatient drug addiction treatment program.
