To assist a failing kidney in doing its job, hemodialysis, more commonly known as dialysis, uses a machine called a dialyzer to cleanse the blood. Cleansing is performed by accessing a vein and artery to allow the flow of blood through the dialyzer. The dialyzer then filters the blood of toxins and waste before returning it to the patientÂ’s body.
Dialysis treatments must occur three times a week in most cases, and each session can last between two and four hours. Repeated needle sticks at this frequency would compromise a patientÂ’s veins.
