LegalView has updated their brain injury portal to provide updated information to brain injury patients and their families. A recent study performed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has shown that nutrition may play a vital role in the improving the outcome of traumatic brain injuries.
According to the report, when soldiers are administered proteins and an infusion of calories soon after a brain injury occurs, the outcome of injury seems to improve. The report which was commissioned by the Department of Defense is urging the military to make infusions of calories calories and proteins part of a standard of care after an injury has occurred.
Additionally, these results can be translated to civilian care to benefit those who have been injured in automobile accidents, falls, or sports-related injuries, says the IOM panel chairman John Erdman, PhD, professor emeritus of food science and human nutrition at the University of Illinois.
Brain injuries are commonplace in the military. Since 2000, there have been more than 200,000 cases of traumatic brain injury diagnosed, according to the Defense and Veteran Brain Injury Center. Approximately 2,100 of these cases were considered severe.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.7 million Americans are diagnosed with brain injuries each year. Of those, approximately 50,000 die and 275,000 are hospitalized.
The military is trying to better understand how to better treat military personal. The Department of Defense has asked the IOM to review the literature surrounding the possible connection between nutrition and brain damage outcome. Last year, Erdman and his colleagues met several times before submitting their report to the military. His colleagues consisted of a mix of food and nutrition specialists, neurologists, and other experts.
There are many causes of brain injury. The most common of them are falls which account for 35 percent. Other causes include: motor vehicle accidents (17 percent), struck by/against events (17 percent), and assaults (10 percent). The categories of struck by/against events and assaults are the categories that affect military personal the most as they are most likely to have something hit their heads such as bullets.
Brain damage can cause short-term and long-term consequences. Many of those who are diagnosed with a severe brain injury suffer serious impairments that affect their daily functioning.
