Texas Injury Lawyer Joe Stephens Takes the Tough Cases, from Pill Mills to Amusement Park Accidents

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 15, 2011 ) Katy, Texas - While many were calling a father’s death an accident after a fall from a rollercoaster, Houston Injury Lawyer Joe Stephens set to work filing a formal complaint with the state. Not because they represent anyone in the case – but because it was the right thing to do in what is sure to be a complex and difficult case. It is in such cases that attorney Stephens has excelled during a legal career in which he has won numerous million dollar trial verdicts in some of Texas’ most unique, complex and difficult cases.

The historic $10.7 million jury verdict in the recent Texas pill mill case is the latest courtroom victory for Joe Stephens who tried the case with Tommy Hastings, another prominent Houston injury lawyer.

The Texas medical malpractice award was rendered by a Houston jury in January in what is believed to be the first jury verdict against a pill mill (Harris County cause no. 2009-41648). The lawsuit against the Family Medi Clinic in The Woodlands, claimed the pain management clinic reaped enormous profits from selling prescription narcotics without regard for their legitimate medical use. The verdict was also rendered against Dr. Maurice S. Conte, who was involved in at least 17 pill mills, according to evidence at trial. Dr. Conte was shown to have issued 15,000 prescriptions for a potent combination of Vicodin, Soma, and Xanax, which has no legitimate medical use, according to experts at trial. Michael Skorpenske was 54 at the time of his death and had been disabled by a back injury.

Last week, Attorney Stephens issued a letter to the Texas Department of Insurance, which raised serious questions about the actions of Ray Cammack Shows and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in the wake of the fatal Houston amusement park accident that claimed the life of a 47-year-old Houston father who fell from a rollercoaster. Stephens had assisted a mother in filing a complaint about the same coaster two years ago, after the safety bar malfunctioned, leaving both her and her 4-year-old daughter unrestrained. The Stephens law firm had also previously filed a Houston personal injury lawsuit against Ray Cammack Shows involving another accident.

In 2007, he secured a $3.75 million wrongful death verdict in Houston against Clara Harris, who ran over her husband in her Mercedes in a jealous rage after finding him with his mistress (Harris County cause no. 2004-37461).

He won a $6.5 million premise liability verdict in Texas after a man was killed during a robbery at the Quarry Market Mall in San Antonio (Bexar County cause no. 2003-CI18848). The mall had been the site of over 200 major crimes but had no visible security around its parking lot.

Attorney Stephens has nearly three decades of experience representing personal injury and wrongful death cases. A Personal Injury Trial Law Specialist through the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1993, Attorney Stephens has won multiple verdicts over $1 million and is a Million Dollar Advocates Member. He is also the author of The Texas Accident Bible, A Survivor's Legal Guide, and Hiring the Right Injury Lawyer.
