Schools Still Experience Trouble with Asbestos

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 08, 2011 ) LITTLE COMPTON, RI- When a parent drops his or her child off at school, he or she assumes that their child will come to no harm while they are in school. However, it has recently been discovered that asbestos in schools is still a problem.

Recently, the roof of a Rhode Island school collapsed due to large quantities of water that had seeped through the 20-year-old roof. School was canceled the next day and the area has been restricted to expert personal only. In order to ensure the safety and proper repair of the site, the fire chief, building inspector, roofing and electrical contractors, carpenters, architects and asbestos experts worked on the site.

In another asbestos incident, a Colorado school was evacuated when officials discovered a material that may have been asbestos.

Also, in 2008 a school in New Hampshire was inspected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the EPA determined that the school failed to report about asbestos within the school. The school runs an elementary and nursery school and had no plans for the removal of the toxic substance. The school was fined and was required to remove all asbestos according to EPA procedures and guidelines.

Asbestos exposure has been shown to cause mesothelioma, the deadly lung cancer. The connection to the hazardous material has been the focus of many asbestos settlements and law suits in recent years.

Symptoms of mesothelioma include: chest pain, persistent cough and abdominal pain. Unfortunately, it can take upwards of 30 years from the initial asbestos exposure for mesothelioma to manifest, making it difficult to pinpoint how and where the individual was exposure. It is also often difficult for physicians to diagnose as the disease in its early stages as it can present itself as pneumonia or other health problems.

It is estimated that about 2,000 to 3,000 American lives are claimed by mesothelioma each year. Of those diagnosed with Stage II or later are only given about a year to live.

Patients have many different options for mesothelioma treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgeries are just a few of the options that patients have. Still, the disease is extremely aggressive and there is currently no cure.
