Elastomeric infusion pumps are also known as balloon pumps. These are non-electronic and disposable in nature that delivers fluids such as analgesics, and antibiotics, among others into the patient’s body in controlled amounts. The pressure for administering the drug comes from the elastomeric layer that placed inside the pump. When the pump is filled, the layer gets stretched and the elastomeric constriction drives the liquid through the tubing and eventually through a flow restrictor out to patient’s connection. An elastomeric pump does not require electricity and not based on gravity. Placing the elastomeric pump above or below the patient, the pressure differ slightly. Elastomeric pump should be filled through a one-way valve using peristaltic repeater pump or a syringe. The pressure is constant through the end of the infusion. Time of the drug delivery depends upon the size of elastomeric infusion pump, usually ranging from thirty minutes to seven days.
