Are Big Pharmaceutical Companies Exploiting The Recession?

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 09, 2010 ) Los Angeles, CA - The recession has hit hard, bringing about major job losses and businesses losing profit or being forced to go out of business. However, there are a few markets in which business in booming during the difficult recession. The pharmaceutical companies in particular are doing well during the recession which has hit hard for most everyone else.

How can pharmaceutical companies boom during a recession? The answer is simple. The recession has made the unemployment rate and foreclosure rate skyrocket which in turn has made stress, depression, and and weight gain skyrocket. Patients then go to doctors for help and are prescribed medications such as Xanax, Valium, and Phentermine.

One of the worst effects of the recession has been the massive job losses. Unemployment has skyrocketed. Not having a job, and having a family to support and bills stacking up without the money to pay them, obviously causes major stress. Stress is a direct cause of many diseases and illness.

Unemployed people, their spouses, and family members are all experiencing stress. Foreclosures rates have skyrocketed and many families have lost their homes. Families have had to move in with other family members to have a roof over their head and people who own homes are worried about being able to pay their mortgage. Security once held has now disappeared and many people have found themselves starting over and in unchartered territory. Credit card debt has also piled up with people trying to survive off of credit cards until a job comes along, and the high credit card balance and high interest rates alone are a recipe for major stress.

People looking for work who havenÂ’t been successful in finding employment feel major stress and depression. Often they feel hopeless after not being hired despite their job seeking efforts, they feel guilty about not being able to provide for their family, they worry about the future, and they suffer from low self esteem and feel worthless, especially if they are forced to be supported by family members just to have the basics.

Many people with secure jobs that have not been affected by the recession find themselves needing to help support family members who are struggling. Some open up their homes for relatives, while others send grown children money to help them pay basic bills. The stress has had a ripple effect.

Stress and depression also commonly lead to weight gain. Stress produces hormones that slow down metabolism to cause weight gain, unemployed people may become sedentary, depression sucks energy, and emotional eating is very common. When life has become to stressful or depressing to handle, many turn to food for comfort on a daily basis to make them feel better, which results in weight gain.

Through all this, the pharmaceutical companies have seen profits climb. Are the pharmaceutical companies exploiting the recession or are they just one of the fortunate businesses that thrive in a recession?

The recession has been a direct cause of many cases of stress, depression, and weight gain which turns into profits for the pharmaceutical companies. One of the most stressful things that can be experienced is having a family to support, obligations, and not having an income. This leads to worrying night and day over many things such as if they will even have a home next month and where will their family live? Xanax or Valium are prescribed to help people cope with this kind of stress.

People see doctors with their symptoms of stress, depression and weight gain for help. Xanax and Valium are popular medicines that help reduce anxiety and calm nerves and Phentermine is for people who have gained weight to help curb their appetite. But these medications are only available from a local pharmacy if you have healthcare.

The more people who have been prescribed these medications during the recession, the more the recession has helped the pharmaceutical companies profit. Pharmaceutical companies have become extremely rich during the recession.
