Viagra, and its uses Beyond Dysfunction.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 05, 2010 ) Nature designed humans to reach the peak of our sexual activity coincidentally at a point in our lives when perhaps we are not best prepared to make the best use of it.

As we go through our phases of life, constantly learning from mistakes and becoming mentally more mature and more fulfilled, our body and our biological schedule persist on a different schedule. With the proliferation of erectile dysfunction drugs, successful, mature adults at the pinnacle of their careers are taking erectile dysfunction drugs, recapturing lost sexual vivacity and living what what many are describing as a more complete life.

It is no secret that, historically, the frequency of sexual activity tends to decreases as the relationship ages. Also, married couples tend to attribute more happiness to the early newlywed stage of their marriages. During this newlywed stages, couples have less financial success, not much real-life experience, do not have the joy of children, and very little in the way of a sense of fulfillment.

Contrarily, middle-aged couples who have a sense of accomplishment and what many would consider more reasons to be happy, tend to be less satisfied. Surveys have shown that while all things in their lives may be great, the lack of a healthy and active sex life trumps all other factors contributing to a couple’s overall happiness and well being.

No doctor in America has a problem with prescribing erectile dysfunction medication to patients with impotence. In fact, the popularity of these drugs and financial success cannot be entirely accredited to the impotence crowd. In fact, across the world, these drugs have been increasingly used as a performance enhancement for healthy adults. And while evidence continues to show promise in the relationship counseling field, many practitioners struggle with the idea of prescribing a drug for erectile dysfunction when impotence is not present. As one influential doctor in this field stated, “I am in the business of healing the sick, not enhancing the healthy.”

We cannot ignore this important ethical consideration. A commonly cited example of the popular use of a prescription drug for questionable medical purpose is medical marijuana. In Los Angeles, there were only four medical marijuana dispensaries in the city when the city council first addressed the issue in 2005. That number grew to 187 when the council imposed a moratorium on new facilities in 2007. Now, the city has estimates as high as 1,000 medical marijuana facilities. Whatever the actual number, the running joke is there are more pot dispensaries in Los Angeles then there are Starbucks. And for LA, that is a lot! The point is that the explosion of these opening of these dispensaries is in no way consistent with the number of terminally ill patients for whom the use of medical marijuana had approved for. Instead, it is well known that many are enjoying medical marijuana for recreational purposes. And while a prescription is needed, most doctors remain parsimonious in giving out prescriptions for marijuana, but LA residents had quickly discovered who the doctors are that are more liberal in their prescription practices.

While couples continue to garner the benefits of increased intimacy with the help of prescription to erectile dysfunction drugs, the little secret of using the medication for performance enhancement rather than to treat impotence is becoming the elephant in the room. Considering its proliferation, ultimately lawmakers and the medical world will have to make some decisions. Perhaps one of them will be to allow the use of these drugs for issues other than impotence, or to drop the need for a prescription all together.
