TerraPur Explains Connection Between Standard American Diet And Colon Cancer

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 14, 2016 ) Jacksonville, FL -- Colon cancer is on the decline according to the American Cancer Society but every year, thousands are expected to develop the disease and many of them will die from it. In 2015 alone, new colorectal cases are estimated to be at 142,700, with 93,090 of these being in the colon and 39,610 being in the rectum. Many factors have been identified to cause these diseases and the Standard American Diet or SAD is considered as one of the major culprits since food consumption is linked to as many as 90 percent of colon cancer cases.

In 2007, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that SAD can triple the risk of developing colon cancer. SAD is comprised of heavily processed foods that are saturated with fat, contains very little fiber, vitamins and essential minerals, and is also associated with high sugar content. Artificial flavors and chemical additives are involved with SAD as well, and many companies selling foods in the SAD category neglect to include these details on the label. As a result, many Americans are not only consuming unhealthy foods but are unknowingly ingesting harmful substances in the process.

A number of steps are encouraged in helping to decreases the chances of developing colon cancer. There's the standard colonoscopy which is advised to be made a scheduled habit. If the possibility of colon cancer seems high, a number of tests can be done to screen individuals such as a fecal occult blood test (FOBT). A sigmoidoscopy is also standard, along with a stool DNA test and a CT solonography. Dual-contrast barium might also be required.

Through these screening processes, colon cancer can be detected early and therefore will lead to early treatment. More than screening to detect colon cancer though, the American Cancer Society advises a shift in diet to include fruits, lean meat, vegetables and fish for starters.
