Seventy-One Percent of Americans sleep with their smartphones, says new study

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 17, 2015 ) A recent mobile consumer report conducted by Bank of America claims that not only do Americans sleep with their smartphones but it is also the first thing on people' minds when they wake up. 35% of the people check their smartphones first thing in the morning while 10% said it was for their significant other.

Millenials especially are the owners of the device and the trend is said to increase everyday.

Almost 57% of Americans use their phone at least once in an hour throughout the day. And in NY, the statistics soars up to 96% while California comes second to 88%.

Many are using it for banking purposes either via app or web browser. In California, 57% are using it as a mobile banking app mainly for banking notifications, alerts, checking account balances or deposits etc. Comparatviely 53% of New Yorkers and Texans use bamking apps quite actively.

Not so much into smartphones? Move to Denver as they are less likely to survive without smartphones. 49% of people say that they use phones only for calls while 27% say that they could refrain from phone indefinitely.

However, use of smartphones are inevitable i.e. 63% of Denver residents sleep with their phones.

HOW SMARTPHONE IMPACTS SLEEP

Switch off your mobile phone at 9 pm and you will wake up feeling more positive and productive both at professional and personal fronts.

As per a research conducted by the University of Washington, using your phone till late at night can affect the circadian rhythm and impact the quality of sleep. This will definitely put a negative spin on your work the next day.

Christopher Barnes, an assistant professor of management at the University of Washington's Foster School of Business who is the leader of research says that “smartphones are enormously valuable for helping people to fit work activity into times and places outside of the office. But unfortunately, smartphones are almost perfectly designed to disrupt sleep.”

Stating the obvious reason is because it keeps us mentally alert all through the day making it hard for the brain to register the fact that it is time to hit the sack. The exposure to red/blue light from electronic gadgets also reduces the production of melatonin hormone which is vital for sleep.

It is important to keep your brain high and active at all times especially in the morning when you are starting your day. “The more important the job, the more important it is to work with a fresh brain”, says researchers.
