Frontrunners Health Explains Why Good Food Alone May Not Be Enough Protection For Expectant Mothers

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 16, 2015 ) Garland, TX -- Expectant mothers are often surprised by the sheer volume of nutritional advice they receive from health professionals and from well-meaning family members and friends. Sorting through all the information can be daunting. Frontrunners Health, a company well known for their professional grade nutritional supplements, recently took the time to explain why it's vital for pregnant women to take prenatal vitamins to give added protection to their babies.

"Many 'experts' claim you can get all the nutrition you need from food. In a perfect world that might be possible," commented Dr. James Mixon, Frontrunners Health's CFO. "But most of us don't grow our own organic vegetables and can't devote several hours each day to cooking perfectly balanced meals. Of course, we recommend that expectant mothers eat a healthy diet, but we also suggest taking a prenatal vitamins to fill the nutritional gaps."

According to Frontrunners Health, some of the problems faced when trying to eat a healthy diet, include busy work schedules, which lead to time constraints, and fast food meals which aren't likely to meet the ideal vitamin and mineral requirements. To make things more complicated, even fresh fruits and vegetables may not deliver the expected dose of vitamins and minerals.

Frontrunners Health's spokesperson, Kerrin Kuntzman explains, "In North America it can take 5 days for fruits and vegetables to make it from the field to a local distribution hub. Calculate in another three or so days on grocers shelves and up to another week in a consumer's refrigerator. That means it may be 14 days or so, before we actually eat our ‘fresh' produce. During this time, valuable nutrients begin to degrade."

Cooking also breaks down the vitamin content in foods. Vitamin C is water soluble and is very sensitive to light, oxygen and heat. Depending upon the cooking method, vegetables may lose from 15 to 55% of their vitamin C content. Other water soluble vitamins are also affected.

The solution to these issues? In the opinion of many top nutrition leaders, it's best to supplement our healthy eating habits, with a high quality multivitamin. Although this advice holds true for any adult, it is particularly important for pregnant women. Specific nutrients, such as folate, help prevent certain birth defects, such as spina bifida and some heart defects. Adequate supplement at the earliest stages of pregnancy helps to reduce these risks.

Dr. Mixon says, "We developed Baby's Best Start prenatal vitamins, to help women get top-quality nutrition in a gentle formula that addresses the stomach sensitivities so many women face while pregnant. We've also added lutein to assist in a baby's eye and brain development. Our wish is for every expectant mother to deliver a happy, healthy baby."
