Research Investigates The Ability Of Turmeric To Dilate Arteries And Reduce Heart Disease Risk

(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 05, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Turmeric is an ancient spice that has been used for thousands of years in the kitchen and for medicinal purposes. Its use is believed to offer therapeutic benefits for a range of conditions, including the risk of cardiovascular harms.

Research investigates the ability of turmeric to dilate the arteries and reduce the heart disease risk associated with the intake of unhealthy food items. Turmeric contains a phytochemical called curcumin, which contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, among others.

"Curcumin supplements are available nowadays online or at health stores, and they are believed to help fight a range of conditions," said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

In 2014, The Nutrition Journal published a recent study with a title "A Single consumption of curry improved postprandial endothelial function in healthy male subjects: a randomized, controlled crossover trial."

The study, which occurred in Japan, reveals that turmeric offers indispensable value for overall health. This concept is even more strengthened with the existence of the word recipe, which indicates its first recorded use as a medical prescription in mid-16th century France.

In a study, there were 14 healthy subjects with an average age of 45 years who were instructed to consume a spice-free control meal or single serving of curry meal. The researchers studied the effects of the diet on the blood vessels before and after the meal consumption.

According to the post-meal measurements, the consumption of curry helped increase the blood flowing through the blood vessels. In other words, it increased the postprandial flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD). However, individuals who had a curry-free control meal experienced a reduction in blood flow.

The findings of the study have led the researchers to conclude that curry, which contains the compound curcumin, could help prevent the negative effects carried along with eating a meal. It is believed to prevent the contraction of the endothelium, which is the inner lining of the blood vessels. It is believed that the antioxidant properties of the natural ingredient helped with preventing cardiovascular events.

Nowadays, lifestyle-related diseases, such as diabetes and atherosclerosis, have become some of the most serious health problems. It is thought that curcumin could help reduce the risk of these diseases. It is important to note that heart disease is considered the number one cause of mortality worldwide.

Adding the natural ingredient, which is believed to have artery-contracting properties, can be very useful when added to dishes. There are also curcumin supplements available for individuals who want to obtain the therapeutic benefits of the ingredient in an easy and convenient way (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00VSVKJ8I/).
