The researchers wanted to determine if dietary changes could reduce the potential of irreversible blindness among adults.
The researchers found that by increasing the consumption of foods rich in specific carotenoids, it was possible to decrease the risk of developing advanced AMD. Dark, leafy green vegetables were found to be particularly beneficial, such as spinach or collard greens. In other research, Seddon and colleagues also found that a diet high in unhealthy fats can also have a negative impact on eye health. These studies highlight the importance diet has on protecting vision. It's believed that a diet rich in antioxidants helps to protect the eyes from stress which can promote the development of diseases such as AMD. By increasing antioxidant intake and avoiding unhealthy foods high in saturated fats, it's possible to better protect eye health.
