Experts Provide Tips On How To Reduce Risk Of Stomach Problems Associated With Pain Relievers

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 05, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- Most, if not all, arthritis sufferers take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, and other pain relief drugs just to achieve pain relief. These pharmaceutical drugs are a great solution for those who want to achieve relief from inflammation and pain. However, there are side effects when using these medications, such as upset stomach and bleeding ulcers.

Experts provide tips on how to reduce the risk of stomach problems associated with pain relievers. There are about 20 traditional NSAIDs that arthritis sufferers use nowadays, such as naproxen, ibuprofen and aspirin. These pain relief drugs are found to help improve the pain and mobility of sufferers, but their side effects have led many to resort to other pain management methods.

"In addition to, or aside from, pharmaceutical drugs, there are many arthritis sufferers who use natural supplements such as glucosamine, not just to achieve pain relief, but also to improve their mobility," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Robert Hoffman, M.D., chief of rheumatology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, believes that these pain relief drugs can be detrimental to the GI tract in various ways. There are conditions that usually develop from using NSAIDs, such as esophaegeal reflux disease, gastritis and bleeding ulcers.

The good news is that there are things that people can do to reduce problems such as stomach upsets. However, it is important to remember that there are no guarantees that severe problems won't occur such as hospitalization or death, especially among older people who are at an increased risk.

One of the best things to do is to use pain relief drugs on a short term basis, and this means for about 10 days. Painkillers should also be taken with a glass of water and food, or better yet with a calcium supplement or antacid. It is also important to stop smoking and drinking alcohol as both can increase one's risk of stomach problems.

When the painkiller is taken can also influence its effects on the body. Experts suggest that NSAIDs should be taken in the afternoon or evening. For individuals who take other medications in addition to pain relief drugs, they should also consult with a pharmacist or doctor to avoid side effects.

Many people find pain relief drugs helpful, but it is undeniable that most of them do cause long-term side effects. These side effects have led many arthritis sufferers to make some changes and resort to other pain management options such as glucosamine supplements (http://amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/product-reviews/B00DUMO9X4/).
