Philadelphia Man Found Guilty For Killing His Girlfriend In An Alcohol-Related Car Crash

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 26, 2015 ) Philadelphia, PA -- Despite Anthony Reeder, 47, insisting that someone had been driving his car the night of the crash in 2012, he has been found guilty. The fatal crash occurred in 2012 after Reeder's SUV overturned and crashed into two rowhouses on the 3100 block of Bambrey Street. The accident only left Reeder with a few bruises, however his girlfriend Sheila Whalen was left dead.

According the the Philadelphia Inquirer, Reeder told officers there was an unknown driver who fled the scene of the crashed Jeep Liberty and was never identified.

Reeder sat in front of a Common Pleas Court Jury of eight men and four women and Judge J. Scott O'Keefe. The jurors deliberated for about two hours and found Reeder guilty of homicide by motor vehicle while driving intoxicated and driving with a suspended license.

According to reports, Reeder slumped down in his chair as the jury left the room, after informing him that he head been found guilty.

Judge J. Scott O'Keefe has set Reeder's sentencing for August 14, and has allowed Reeder to remain on electronically monitored house arrest until his sentencing. Assistant Attorney General Mark Levenberg says that Reeder is being faced with serving a mandatory three to six years in prison for his connection with the car accident which killed his girlfriend.

Reeder had been dating Whalen for two years when the accident happened back on March 3, 2012. The day following the accident during an interview with an Inquirer reporter, Reeder expressed the pain he felt after losing his girlfriend. "In a blink of an eye, your whole life can change. I never, ever had someone who was a good friend, a girlfriend, and a confidante. I am really, really, really going to miss her." Reeder told reporters.

Eighteen days later Reeder was arrested for driving drunk and being the cause of the accident,

An associate from Drug Rehab Philadelphia comments"This is a prime example of how abusing alcohol not only affects you, but those around you too. This man made the poor decision to still drive despite being intoxicated. Not only did he drive himself, but he also drove his now deceased girlfriend. If Reeder would've made the decision not to drink and drive that night, Sheila Whalen would still be here. People who use and abuse drugs and alcohol need to wake up and realize their use does not only affect them. There are countless alcohol-related car crashes annually in our state, and it needs to be stopped."
