Drug and Alcohol Rehab Charlotte Comments On Charleston Shooter's Past With Suboxone

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 25, 2015 ) Charlotte, NC -- According to CBS News, Charleston mass shooting suspect Dylann Roof, had been charged with possession of Suboxone last February . Roof had been arrested on trespassing charges at a mall in Columbia, South Carolina. Police say that when they arrested Roof that he had been carrying a pack of thin orange strips, which were found to be an oral form of the drug Suboxone. The young male admitted that he did not have a prescription for the drug which also attributed to his arrest. As a result, in addition to being charged with trespassing, Roof was also charged with felony possession for not having a prescription for the narcotic drug.

Suboxone is the brand name for a medication which was designed for the treatment of individuals who were dependent on opiates such as heroin. Experts describe the drug as a "step-down" drug from other opiate drugs. The prescription drug comes in the form of pill or film strips, the form which was found on Roof, according to police.

Doctors and researchers from the field of addiction studies claim that Suboxone is very helpful in treating opiate addictions. Although the narcotic is similar to heroin and oxycontin, doctors claim that the drug is safer and is useful in ending addictions to heroin and oxycontin. Suboxone is classified as a schedule III narcotic and only supposed to be prescribed by doctors, however as the black market grows, Suboxone becomes easier to access. According to CBS News, Suboxone is on the list of increasing numbers of prescription drugs offered through black market channels such as "pill mills" or "diversion", which is a result of distributing drugs obtained through a prescription to friends, family, and those willing to pay for the drug.

Experts say that if Roof were to still be using suboxone that the drug would not be likely to contribute to his recent acts of violence. In an interview with CNN, Dr. Adam Bisaga, CUMC psychiatry professor and researcher at New York State Psychiatric Institute says "There is no specific research showing that this specific medication has been linked to aggression. In fact, when used properly this medication would stabilize people who otherwise would irritable, such as heroin addicts undergoing withdrawal and feeling anxious and irritable."

Police are still investigating contributing factors that may have influenced Roof to execute a mass shooting at a church.

A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Charlotte comments "Although Suboxone may not be likely to be a contributing factor to Roof's mass shooting, the fact that he participates in illegal activities such as using prescription drugs not prescribed to him shows that he's troubled. People who use Suboxone recreationally are more susceptible to participate in other crimes, such as murdering people in a church. More should be done when people are caught with prescription drugs that they have not been prescribed to them, behaviors like so imply they're capable of being involved in other illegal activities. I think if Roof had suffered a harsher consequence when being caught trespassing with Suboxone that this whole incident could have potentially been avoided."
