Boston May Adopt Treatment Policy for Drug offenders, Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston Comments

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 25, 2015 ) Boston, MA -- Gloucester has recently lead the initiative to combat addiction and drug offenders by offering treatment instead of incarceration; those policies will be enacted this month, and Boston's mayor Marty Walsh is watching Gloucester's success or failure, and will amend Boston's own drug policies "probably," according to Boston on June 15th. The new policy would stipulate those found with drug paraphernalia would be recommended to a treatment facility, instead of going to prison. Boston quotes Walsh, "I commend Gloucester for what they're doing, I think it's a great idea, a great pilot program. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works and taking that model and possibly using it here in Boston." When asked about when Boston would assume its new policy, Boston quotes Walsh saying, "[the] probably [is] pretty good. . . I'm not sure when, but it's probably fairly good odds." Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston is an addiction treatment facility catering to the entire state of Massachusetts. The rehabilitation center applauds Walsh's openness to extend a progressive treatment option for offenders.

An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab comments, "In an area like Boston where there are many untreated drug and alcohol addicts among the city, a new approach to treatment is sorely welcomed. Many do not seek treatment because they fear the retribution of law enforcement. When our local officials deem treatment more essential than a head count in prison, we know we're making real progress to help people overcome the physical and mental affliction of addiction.

"Walsh's consideration of Gloucester's new program is progressive, and a refreshing refrain from the usual stigma incarceration and treatment debates often elicited out of policy makers. If we can manage to find a happy median, where treatment becomes mandatory, but not life-damaging like incarceration is, we can make real change for those with substance use disorders."
