A Study Found That Rheumatoid Arthritis Can Potentially Put Kidneys At Risk

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 22, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the arthritic conditions that is highly prevalent nowadays. It causes pain and imposes physical limitations that hinder patients from doing their daily routines. However, it seems that it causes more harm than just providing side effects.

A study found that rheumatoid arthritis can potentially put kidneys at risk. According to this study that was published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, individuals with rheumatoid arthritis are nearly 5 percent more susceptible to developing reduced kidney function than other people.

"Reduced kidney function is a sign of chronic kidney disease, and it can gradually deteriorate the health of patients," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Eric Matteson, M.D., Mayo Clinic's chair of the rheumatology department and senior study author, stated that this news is a big deal considering there are about 1.5 million RA patients. Chronic kidney diseases can progress to kidney failure. They can also be caused by conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, inflammation within the kidney and autoimmune processes.

According to previous studies, the increased risk of kidney disease in RA patients is often due to the exposure to certain medications as well as chronic inflammation. Dr. Matteson also stated that it is certain that RA patients can develop particular types of kidney problems. However, there has not been a study that focused on identifying what that risk is.

The study analyzed the health records of 813 individuals diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and another group of 813 people without the condition. All of the subjects were similar in terms of gender, weight, age and other factors. The researchers took into account the levels of creatinine of the subjects and used a formula to measure the estimated eGFR, or glomerular filtration rate. Having a low glomerular filtration rate means that a patient has poor kidney function.

RA patients who experienced high levels of inflammation within the first year after the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis were found to be more susceptible to developing reduced kidney function. According to Dr. Matteson, it can be that the risk factor for renal dysfunction is inflammation.
It was also found that participants who had diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, which are popular risk factors for kidney disease, were also susceptible to reduced kidney function.

Dr. Matteson stated that having kidney disease can be bad news among RA sufferers since it increases their risk for heart disease. A kidney dysfunction is highly associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases, which are also associated with certain ailments and early death.

There are rheumatoid arthritis sufferers who use a natural alternative called the glucosamine supplement to achieve pain relief and protect their kidneys. They refrain from using pharmaceutical drugs that are associated with the development of kidney disease. Instead, they use glucosamine supplements to improve their overall condition (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/product-reviews/B00DUMO9X4/).
