A massive drug bust recently took place in the northeast region of Philadelphia which recovered $3.3 million worth of heroin. Officials say its the biggest heroin bust the city has seen in 20 years.
The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration collaborated to create a joint task force to lead the sting. Authorities say the sting was centered around three locations in Northeast Philadelphia: one in the Bell's corner section, another in Oxford Circle, and the last in the Rhawnhurst area.
Starting in March 2015, investigators began looking into the drug ring for drug dealing and laundering drug money. According to The D.A.'s office, investigators spent "countless surveillance hours" monitoring the property in Bell's Corner. Officials say the Bell's Corner location was being used as a safe house and a stash house to prepare and store the drugs and money.
After making an arrest in relation to the case in April, investigators were able to execute a warrant at the house in Bell's Corner. According to the D.A.'s office, when authorities enered the home they recovered nine kilograms of heroin, a portion of the drugs were cut into 18 racks, each rack contained 50 bundles of heroin, which equates to 11,700 individual packets of heroin. The estimated street value for the drugs totaled to about $3.3 million.
Investigators say in addition to finding large quantities of heroin, they also found various paraphernalia including heat sealer, grinders, plastic bags, stamps, and digital scales.
Thus far three men have been arrested and charged in connection with the multi-million dollar drug bust. All three have been charged with intentional possession of controlled substances, manufacturing and delivering and possession with intent to deliver drugs, conspiracy and racketeering.
"Working with the District Attorney's Office, officers and agents dismantled a significant drug trafficking organization and seized a substantial amount of heroin, denying its distribution to our streets. The DEA will be unrelenting in our pursuit of those individuals pushing heroin into our communities." Special Agent Gary Tuggle said, according to NBC Philadelphia.
