A New Prescription Drug Collection Program Is Being Introduced in New Hampshire

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 18, 2015 ) New Hampshire -- The Bedford Police Department, CVS Pharmacy and The Partnership for Drug Free Kids have joined forces to launch an establishment of a Prescription Drug Collection Unit - Drop
Box. According to a press statement, a dropbox will be placed at the Bedford, NH Public Safety Complex located at 55 Constitution Drive in Bedford, starting June 16th.

CVS/pharmacy has awarded the Bedford Police Department with a grant to install a Drug Collection Unit - Drop Box. The collection units will allow Bedford residents the opportunity to dispose of unwanted, unused, or expired medication in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. The goals of this program are to reduce the amount of unneeded prescription drugs within the homes of Bedford and help decrease prescription drug abuse, especially among teenagers.

According to a 2014 Partnership for Drug-Free Kids study, over 70 percent of teenagers claim it's easy to access prescription drugs in their parents medicine cabinets. Statistics from the Partnership for Drug Free America show that 60 percent of teens who have abused prescription drugs did so before the age of 15. In addition, according to the 2009-2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, New Hampshire had the highest rate of young adults aged 18-25 who used pain relievers for nonmedical purposes, of all reporting states.

The new collection units will also be used to help Bedford prevent contaminating local landfills and water supplies with unused medication. This particular new Drug Collection Unit represents one of the 1,000 units being provided across the country by CVS/pharmacy and The Medicine Abuse Project (MAP), a five year initiative of The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. The donation program is the largest retail pharmacy initiative of it's kind and it supports MAP's goal to prevent 500,000 teens from abusing prescription drugs by the year 2017.

CVS/pharmacy is the exclusive retail pharmacy sponsor of this program, which attributes to the company's Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program. Senior Vice President of Retail Pharmacy at CVS Health, Josh Plum revealed that CVS/pharmacy is dedicated to collaborating with organizations such as The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids and local law enforcement to prevent the abuse of unwanted and expired medication. "The installment of drug collection receptacles is part of our ongoing commitment to battle prescription drug abuse in the U.S. and to help people in the communities we serve on their path to better health," commented Plum.

The Bedford Police Department new Drug Collection Unit location will be housed in the lobby, accessible 24/7 by residents of Bedford. Only residents are allowed to donate, no medications will be accepted from clinics or business. Needles "sharps" containers, IV bags, thermometers, inhalers, liquids, or lotions cannot be accepted.

The Bedford Police Department is said to appreciate the support from CVS/pharmacy, CVS Health's retail division, and the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, which helped make the grant for the Drug Collection Unit in Bedford, NH possible.

A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire comments "I am hopeful that this initiative will help end the epidemic of prescription drug abuse in our state, starting with Bedford. It is unfortunate to know that our state has such high rates of prescription drug abuse among young adults. we must work together to help put an end to this."
