Researchers Investigate The Potentially Good Side Effects Of Taking RA Drugs

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 17, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- RA drugs are proven to be very helpful among patients, especially those who are suffering from unbearable pain. Albeit taking pain relief drugs has been associated with adverse effects, there seems to be more good news for sufferers.

Researchers investigated the potentially good side effects of taking RA drugs. There are many patients who take multiple medications just to manage rheumatoid arthritis. Doctors often monitor and make some adjustments to the treatment to ensure that the disease activity is consistently low.

Susan Manzi, M.D., MPH, director of the Lupus Center for Excellence and Chair of Medicine, is fascinated with the idea that there are many medications used for rheumatoid arthritis that have some added benefits, which we are not even aware of.

"There are several rheumatoid arthritis medications that are used by many patients, and they include methotrexate," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

According to several studies, methotrexate may help reduce cardiovascular disease risk. This medication is often used by patients who are newly diagnosed with RA. It can be taken orally and it doesn't just reduce pain, but also slows down RA progression by blocking certain immune system enzymes. However, its use is also associated with the risk for liver damage and infection.

The Southampton General Hospital's 2010 review analysis of 18 studies found that the use of methotrexate is linked with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease. This is especially beneficial to RA patients who are also at risk for the heart condition.

Christopher J. Edwards, FRCP, M.D., Sounthampton General Hospital's Consultant Rheumatologist, stated that atherosclerosis, which is characterized by a fatty plaque buildup in the arteries, is an inflammatory disease that is considered to be the leading cause of heart attacks. Using methotrexate can potentially turn off inflammation and reduces cardiovascular disease risk.

Researchers have not yet determined the dose of methotrexate that can reduce cardiovascular disease risk or how long it can take for the positive effects to kick in. Dr. Edwards stated that the standard dose every week, which is 10 to 20mg, seems to help reduce the risk. NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and biologics such as TNF inhibitors, are also arthritis medications that are associated with some good side effects.

Many arthritis sufferers would be delighted to know that their medications can provide them with some good side effects. This is something good considering that many sufferers have reduced or eliminated the use of arthritis drugs due to the bad side effects they are associated with. There are even many individuals who use glucosamine supplements to achieve pain relief and improved mobility without experiencing some side effects (http://amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
