The Arthritis Foundation Has Provided Some Tips For Managing A Gout Attack

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 16, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Gout attacks often take place in the wee hours, and they can wake people up with a big toe that's red, tender and radiating heat. This can last from hours to days and if left untreated, can go on for weeks. According to experts, it must be treated within 36 hours.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided some tips for managing a gout attack. There are NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and indomethacin that can help stop an attack. According to experts, patients should use the medications that are already on hand.

"Those who cannot tolerate the use of NSAIDs may take Colchicine, as this medication works by preventing the uric acid crystal buildup that forms in joints and relieving inflammation," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Experts suggest that patients avoid using aspirin, as it can worsen the attack by affecting their uric acid level. Those who have only been taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, such as naproxen and ibuprofen, may not suffer from the increase.

There are several ways to deal with gout attacks and one is to call a doctor. Patients should make an appointment for gout treatment immediately and discuss the lifestyle changes and medications needed. Patients can follow a low-purine diet, as purines are substances found in plant and animal foods that convert to uric acid once inside the body. They can ask their physician about the measures that they can take when they experience an acute attack again.

Experts also suggest patients be able to learn how to protect the joint, and this means getting plenty of rest during an attack. They should also drink plenty of fluids to keep themselves hydrated. This will significantly help flush out uric acid and avoid kidney stones. According to experts, patients should aim for drinking eight to sixteen cups of fluids per day.

"Applying an ice pack to the affected areas can significantly help ease inflammation and pain. Patients can use a bag of crushed ice, wrap it in a dish cloth and apply to the areas for about 20 to 30 minutes," added O'Sullivan.

The Arthritis Foundation also stated in the guideline it provided on its website that sufferers should avoid eating high-purine foods such as gravies, shellfish, sweetbreads and red meat. It is also best that they avoid consumption of alcohol such as beer. Beer has high levels of purines and is a dehydrating beverage. It is also known to inhibit the uric acid excretion from the body.

Most of the best remedies are inexpensive and can be done using natural methods. For instance, pain, which is often suffered by individuals with arthritis, is usually remedied by individuals with arthritis using natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements. Curcumin has very powerful anti-inflammatory substances and is believed to be an effective pain management option (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
