Drug Rehab Baltimore Comments on Issue of Stolen Prescription Drugs During Baltimore Riots

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 16, 2015 ) Baltimpre, MD -- According to the Baltimore Sun, police are afraid of what's to come from all of the prescription drugs looted from various pharmacies during the riots which took place in Baltimore.

Baltimore's police department is currently working with the Drug Enforcement Administration to seize over 175,00 doses of prescription drugs which were looted from 27 pharmacies and two methadone clinics during the riots which took place in late April. The riots occured in the wake of what rioters felt was an unjust death of Freddie Gray, who sustained a multitude of injuries while in police custody a few weeks prior to the riots.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts believes that the amount of drugs that are currently on the streets of Baltimore could impose a great danger on the city. "There's enough narcotics on the streets of Baltimore to keep it intoxicated for a yea. That amount of drugs has thrown off the balance on the streets of Baltimore." said Batts.

According to DEA Special Agent Gary Tuggle, more drugs had been stolen than reported. Tuggle says close to 40% of the pharmacies victimized by looting had not yet finished calculating their losses.

Despite pharmacies reporting that both prescription drugs and personal medical information had been stolen, there has yet to be any evidence that any of the personal information which was stolen had been used for fraud, according to pharmacies and law officials.

In efforts to help prevent the use of prescription drug fraud, pharmacies such as Rite Aid are using extra precautions. Rite Aid has hired Kroll, a risk management firm, as a precaution to send out letters alerting those whom have been impacted and sharing proactive measures to help protec themselves against identity theft.

By federal law, all organizations bound by medical privacy laws, including pharmacies, are required to disclose breaches of customer data. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, these organizations have 60 days to notify customers of any breaches that have taken place.

A medical associate from Drug Rehab Baltimore comments "This whole series of events which took place in Baltimore are very unfortunate. It's quite sad how these riots have spiraled out of control, so much that thousands of stolen drugs are currently on our street. The city of Baltimore is already being faced with a serious epidemic of addiction and substance abuse, this will only add to the problem. I am very hopeul that police and DEA will be able to recover a majority of these drugs or our city may be in big trouble."
