Health Experts Recommend Some Relief Options For Fifth Disease Patients

(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 16, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Fifth Disease is believed to affect 50% of adults and 75% of children. This viral infection is caused by human parvovirus B19, and usually occurs among children ages 5 to 15 years old. Although it is a mild viral illness in young people, more scientists are investigating the best remedies for the condition.

Health experts are now recommending some treatment options for patients suffering from Fifth Disease. The condition is prevalent among individuals who are residing in temperate climates. It also typically takes place during spring and winter, and is more common in girls than boys. There is still no vaccine against the virus, but those who have already suffered from it are immune for life.

Fifth Disease can be transmitted in the same way as viral colds are spread. Children can get the condition by inhaling air that contains the viral particles from an infected person's sneeze or cough. However, not all can be instantly affected through direct contact of the virus. As a matter of fact, only 50% of individuals who live with someone who is infected can get the disease.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, the symptoms of the disease can be mild. If symptoms do develop, they typically start appearing about 4 to 15 days after exposure. One of the first symptoms is a red rash on the cheeks, which makes the person appear as though he or she has been slapped. Other symptoms will then follow such as red, lacy rash on the legs, arms, stomach and back.

There are also other symptoms associated with the disease. These symptoms include headache, sore throat, low-grade fever, joint pain and stomach pain. Joint pain often lasts from 2 to 3 days, and is more common in adult sufferers.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided some treatment options for the condition on its website. The organization suggests that joint pain and fever in children often don't require treatment, but they can be alleviated with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. These pharmaceutical drugs are also used by adults suffering from arthritis, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often used in prolonged arthritis symptoms. There are also arthritis sufferers who use natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements in addition to, or as a substitute for, these pharmaceutical drugs.

Glucosamine is associated with various health benefits, such as potentially providing pain relief and reducing inflammation. There are even arthritis sufferers who believe that glucosamine supplements are better alternatives than drugs (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
