The Arthritis Foundation Announces New Guideline For Screening Psoriatic Arthritis Patients

(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 05, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Psoriatic arthritis affects 30 percent of individuals who suffer from the chronic skin condition known as psoriasis. In a majority of cases, arthritis arises years after the onset of psoriasis. However, there are cases when arthritis symptoms occur before, or at the same time as, psoriasis starts appearing. Information about co-morbidities is essential for sufferers, and this is why experts are seeking to educate the public about the disease.

The Arthritis Foundation is releasing new guidelines for psoriatic arthritis patients. The aim of the guidelines is to increase awareness and help people to understand that chronic inflammatory arthritis can affect more than just the joints and skin. They also seek to educate doctors on the best ways to screen individuals with psoriatic arthritis for medical conditions that typically accompany the disease.

"Experts believe that the most important thing is to treat the body as a whole. This means treating the conditions that accompany psoriatic arthritis. They also added that it is imperative for physicians treating these patients to be aware of co-morbidities," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center's director, Elaine Husni, MD, believes that the co-morbidities for psoriatic arthritis have always been underreported and underappreciated. Dr. Husni was a leader in the group that penned the new guidelines at the joint meeting of GRAPPA (Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis) and the SPARTAN (Spondyloarthritis Research and Treatment Network).

Psoriatic arthritis symptoms include a red, scaly rash, morning stiffness, swollen joints, general fatigue and a reduced range of motion. According to Dr.Husni, recent research is beginning to reveal new information about the general health risks for patients. She recommended that all psoriatic arthritis patients should be screened.

According to the group that drafted the guidelines, there was evidence showing an association between psoriatic arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as ophthalmic conditions such as uveitis.

"There are many sufferers of psoriatic arthritis nowadays, and this is why it is important that they are given the necessary medical attention," added O'Sullivan.

Drugs are often prescribed by healthcare professionals to help patients manage their conditions. However, there are also sufferers who use natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements. Curcumin is an active ingredient of turmeric and is believed to have many health benefits (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
