Osteoarthritis Highly Prevalent Among The Elderly Population

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 26, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Arthritis is a condition that affects people of all ages and status. It can be common in athletes or those who engage in excessive physical activities, but also affects overweight children and adults. However, those most prone to the condition are individuals aged 65 years and above.

Research has shown that an estimated half of the elderly population are suffering from osteoarthritis and other arthritic conditions. Most of these patients frequently experience joint pain and suffer from related physical limitations.

According to experts, those who are 65 years old and above are highly susceptible to the condition and this is due to a number of factors. They believe that the naturally-occurring glucosamine levels in the body gradually decrease as part of the aging process. Combined with normal wear and tear in the joints, the reduction in glucosamine levels affects the body's ability to repair damaged or worn cartilage.

"Decreasing levels of natural glucosamine in the body is a part of life that unfortunately impacts our joint health," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan. "That is why several experts believe the use of glucosamine supplements could replenish the glucosamine loss and help to maintain healthy joints."

Certain factors are known to trigger the development of arthritis, such as obesity and family history. However, aging is often deemed as the most common cause of the condition in the elderly population. A recent survey showed that up to 25 percent of men and women over the age of 70 have reported knee pain. Experts suggest that this knee pain is caused by osteoarthritis.

"Individuals, especially those who belong to the elderly population, should remember that even if they don't experience symptoms, it doesn't mean that they do not have arthritis. It is best to consult a healthcare professional to receive a proper diagnosis," added O'Sullivan.

Many arthritis patients around the world are turning to glucosamine supplements as an alternative to prescription medication. Some experts recommend glucosamine supplements that also contain other natural ingredients, including chondroitin, MSM and turmeric (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
