More Arthritis Patients Are Living With Their Condition Without Drugs

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 18, 2015 ) Portland, Oregon -- Typically, sufferers of arthritis achieve pain relief through the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, with the FDA warning against long-term use due to potentially severe side effects, natural alternatives are increasingly becoming popular.

More arthritis patients are living with their condition without the use of drugs. While different methods work for different people, experts are encouraging those with arthritis to investigate more sustainable ways to manage their pain.

"There are actually a wide variety of non-drug treatment options available. What makes this even more interesting is that some of these remedies are supported by studies and proven to work," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are several ways to deal with arthritis without using drugs. One such method is hot or cold treatments that are typically applied on the site of the pain. Those with chronic pain are encouraged to make use of the heating method, while those with acute pain can try cold packs.

Studies have shown that mental and emotional states can also impact arthritic pain levels. It seems the way patients deal with arthritis can significantly affect their overall health condition. There were studies that demonstrated that a sense of humor can increase a person's ability to handle pain. Experts believe that humor has a way of boosting the immune system and this significantly helps in pain relief. Having a positive attitude is also believed to distract the brain from focusing on pain.

"Relaxation techniques are also advised to train our muscles to relax and slow down our thoughts. We can do this by using techniques such as guided imagery and visualization, as well as deep breathing techniques," added O'Sullivan.

A number of arthritis patients are resorting to regular exercise as it helps them improve their fitness level, strengthen surrounding muscles and thus decrease the level of pain they are suffering from. There are also those who use massage to help them relax their muscles, release tension and achieve pain relief. Other popular treatment options include topical lotions, electrical stimulation and acupuncture.

Natural supplements are another popular option, with curcumin supplements becoming an increasingly common choice. Curcumin is an active ingredient found in turmeric and is believed to have many powerful healing effects. Early studies have suggested that curcumin contains anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidants properties. Many patients who use curcumin have testified that they have achieved pain relief after using the supplement (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
