Vitamin D Supplements Found To Boost Hives Treatment

Benefits of Vitamin D

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 16, 2015 ) Hollywood, Florida -- Vitamin D has enjoyed a considerable amount of media attention in recent years. In the early part of the last century, vitamin D became famous when researchers discovered that it could successfully prevent and cure rickets. At the time, rickets was a widespread disease which was leaving thousands of children with severe bone deformities. Once scientists had determined that a vitamin D deficiency prevents the body from absorbing and distributing calcium, many countries rolled out vitamin D fortification programs, and rickets was all but eradicated. Vitamin D wouldn't be in the spotlight again for another eight decades.

Today, vitamin D is once again on the world stage, being researched by scientists all around the globe. In the last decade and a half, researchers have made several remarkable discoveries regarding what is often called the Sunshine Vitamin. Vitamin D is in actual fact a hormone, and hormone D deficiency has been linked to a number of serious illnesses, including prostate cancer; colon cancer; breast cancer; asthma; cardiovascular disease and etc. Hormone D therapy has also often produced remarkable results.

In a relatively recent 12 day study which involved 42 patients with chronic hives, vitamin D3 supplementation successfully reduced the severity of symptoms when used alongside the standard pharmaceutical drugs. Researchers also found that the rate of improvement was dependent on the doses being given. All the patients involved were instructed to continue taking their regular medication, along with a daily vitamin D3 supplement. Some of the participants were given a daily 600 IU vitamin D supplement, while the other participants were given a 4000 IU daily dose.

"At the end of the first week we saw a 33% decrease in symptoms among all participants," said Dr. Jill Poole of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. "However, only those that were on the 4000 IU supplements saw further improvement during the second week, and by the end of the twelve days, their symptoms had been reduced by 40%," she said. While the researchers aren't exactly sure how or why the vitamin D reduces the symptoms, they suspect it has to do with the affect vitamin D is known to have on the immune system. The team is now recommending that vitamin D supplementation should be considered when treating people for hives.

"This will come as fantastic news for those people who are plagued by this terrible ailment," said Oliver Adams, a spokesman for Hollywood based Nutra Mina. "It's also refreshing to see that the researchers have clearly specified that these results were achieved with vitamin D3, because even now, when doctors prescribe vitamin D, they often prescribe vitamin D2 rather than D3, despite the fact that D3 has be proven to be far superior," said Mr. Adams.

The team of researchers that conducted the study has however warned against self medicating with vitamin D supplements without speaking to a doctor first. Like others in the field, they are concerned that people with hives might be tempted into taking too much of the vitamin. While vitamin D overdoses are incredibly rare, extremely high doses over a prolonged period of time can cause problems.
