"These surveys have estimated that over 4 million people in the United States have frequent constipation, corresponding to a prevalence of about 2 percent. The study also stated that constipation is an actual cause of hospitalization and over 3 million patients are prescribed Laxatives every year.
This condition has been linked before as a symptom to other conditions such as hypothyroidism; not surprisingly the study revealed that constipation is three times more common in women than in men, much like statistics reveal that sluggish thyroid conditions are more common in women than in men.
As to the factors involved in the cause of this condition, the study suggested that it is beyond the mainstream recommendation of adding fiber to the diet. It was found that in the south of the United States and within families of low income or brief education, constipation was more prevalent alluding to the need for further investigation and study to pinpoint the factors that would highlight this part of the population as more susceptible to the often painful condition. The study concluded by stating the obvious need to continue the research of the impact on public health that this subject requires.
