More Studies Investigate The Effects Of Alcohol On Arthritis Symptoms

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 09, 2015 ) Portland, Oregon -- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a debilitating condition that affects many people around the world, including 1.3 million individuals in the United States alone. Its development has been associated with certain factors such as the environment and genetics. Aside from genetic and environmental factors, researchers are also investigating the effects of alcoholic beverages on arthritis.

Studies that investigate the effects of alcohol in arthritis continue to increase, with mixed results. According to some researchers, the beverage has the potential to increase a person's risk for rheumatoid arthritis. While other studies found that alcohol intake could reduce a person's risk for the condition.

A peer-reviewed journal called "Rheumatology" published a study that revealed how drinking alcohol have affected the lives of many people. The researchers conducted a survey among 1,800 individuals about rheumatoid arthritis and their alcohol-drinking habits.

Surprisingly, it was found that those who had a drink within three or more days on a weekly basis were less likely to suffer from the condition compared to non-drinkers. In addition to the findings, researchers also revealed that rheumatoid arthritis patients who were in the habit of drinking experienced milder symptoms than those who did not drink.

"While there have been studies that found alcohol intake could potentially decrease a person's risk for the condition, there have also been studies that found excessive intake of the beverage can significantly increase RA risk," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Houston rheumatologist Alan Friedman, MD believes that heavy drinking is absolutely not good for the health. This is especially true of individuals who are on medication or pain-relief drugs that are formulated to reduce joint pain and swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis. According to Friedman, alcohol intake has the same detrimental effect as pain-relief medications have on the liver.

While studies continue to multiply in numbers, many sufferers are watching their intake of alcohol. There are also those who want to avoid the detrimental effects of medications on the liver by using natural pain relief alternatives such as glucosamine supplements. These supplements are believed to be very effective in providing pain relief to rheumatoid arthritis sufferers (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
