New Vitamin D Guidelines Issued In Briton In A Bid To Combat A Deficiency Epidemic

What is Vitamin D

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 26, 2015 ) Hollywood, Florida -- The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which serves as an advisory body to Britain's National Health Service, has issued a stark warning in their latest report. According to NICE, one in six children in England and one in five adults in England are now vitamin D deficient. There is also concern that the current situation might be considerably worse in Northern Ireland; Scotland and Whales. The recent report also says that there are around 10 million people in England who are thought to be clinically vitamin D deficient. Some experts believe that could be more than double if the entire British population were to be screened.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets in children; a disease which causes bones to become soft, often resulting in permanent deformities. In the case of adults, a deficiency can cause bones to become brittle, thereby increasing the risk of fractures and broken bones, particularly among the elderly. Adequate vitamin D blood serum levels can offer 100% protection against both of these serious health concerns.

During the last decade, there has been a renewed interest in vitamin D and the role it plays in terms of general health. An increasing number of studies are finding a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and a range of serious illnesses, including certain forms of cancer. Vitamin D is also essential for a fully functional immune system. In animal studies, vitamin D deprivation was also shown to cause physical abnormalities in certain areas of the brain. Researchers have since reported that similar abnormalities are also present in the brains of people with certain mental health illnesses.

With more than 10 million vitamin D deficient people in England alone, and an ever growing amount of evidence implicating vitamin D deficiency in several serious illnesses, it comes as little surprise that England's chief medical officer has recently urged doctors to prescribe vitamin D supplements to those most at risk. He has also asked retailers and supermarkets to start stocking low cost vitamin D supplements in a bid to make them more accessible for low income families.

"This is fantastic news", said Oliver Adams, a Nutra Mina spokesman. "When you actually have government agencies like NICE and the NHS encouraging people to pay closer attention to their vitamin D status, then people do start listening. I mean, here we have a country's chief medical officer telling doctors to start prescribing vitamin D to patients who are at risk of a deficiency. This is a massive step in the right direction", said Mr. Adams, speaking over the phone from the company's Hollywood office.

Under normal circumstances, the human body produces its own vitamin D when skin is exposed to direct sunlight. However, skin cancer concerns have led many people to severely limit the amount of time they spend in the sun. Additionally, in some parts of the world there simply isn't enough sunlight to ensure adequate vitamin D production all year round. In today's world, vitamin D3 supplements are the only option for many people, say some experts.
