Royal National Institute Calls For Better Eye Health Care In UK

Vehicle Window Sunshade Video Review For Freddie And Sebbie

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 19, 2015 ) Las Vegas, NV -- The Times has just published a report about concerns coming from national institutions regarding general eye care health. According to optometrist Russell Peake, overall general health plays a key role in the health of eyes for how well people see as they get older. He added... "Current research indicates that being more active can help to decrease the risk of the loss of sight from high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and narrowing or hardening of the arteries."

Russell, a Manager for Boots Opticians, says that it is very important to make healthy choices when it concerns the eyes. He added... "Eyes age just like any other part of the body. Look, skin wrinkling is one thing, but losing your eyesight is something completely different. I mean imagine not being able to see your grandchildren. One of the highest risks for eyesight is smoking, almost doubling the risk of loss of sight, through conditions like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of sight loss in the UK."

The Royal National Institute of Blind People says that 100 people in the UK begin to lose their sight each day, yet 50% of sight loss could be avoided, with quitting smoking being a key factor. Russell adds... "So many smokers just don't realize their bad habit causes eye damage, though studies have already described the link between smoking and loss of vision as being as strong as the link between smoking and cancer."

Russell explains that dry eyes is a common condition amongst older people, which can be very uncomfortable. He adds... "When we're staring at PC screens, cell phones and iPads, we only manage to blink half as much as we would normally, meaning the eyes dry out a lot quicker. Another threat to healthy eye sight is a particular spectrum of blue-violet light that can lead to retinal cell death. This spectrum comes from sunlight, the light created by LED and cellphone screens, and low-energy light bulbs."

According to Russell looking after eye health doesn't quite stop there. He added... "Ultra-violet (UV) sunlight rays do have a damaging effect on eyes so it's very important that both adults and children protect their eyes from harmful sun rays by wearing quality sunglasses for outside and having a vehicle window sunshade installed for car trips. Kid's eyes are very susceptible, as up to 80% of UV being exposed to eyes happens before the age of 18. Amazingly enough, though 95% of people know that skin damage and sun exposure are related, only 7% actually know that the sun damages our eyes. Extended exposure to the sun's UV rays has already been linked to cataracts, macular degeneration and even certain types of eye cancer."
