An Omega-3 Rich Diet Lowers Blood Pressure - Www.nutriden.com

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 15, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- Most have heard about the healthy benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids has on cardiovascular health, improving cholesterol levels. BUT what is not commonly known is that by adding Omega 3 fatty acids to a regular diet also prevents or lowers high blood pressure?

When it comes to Omega 3 and the heart, the studies go way back. But, new research has found that the old studies are standing through the test of time. And they are still showing Omega 3s do bring down a person's blood pressure numbers. One thing those that study the research on Omega 3 fatty acids are finding is that there are many reports done showing Omega 3 helps with blood pressure problem, even though the studies were researching something else at the time.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center "there is solid evidence that omega-3 fatty acids (namely EPA and DHA) found in fish oil can help protect against atherosclerosis by preventing the development of plaque and blood clots. Omega-3s can also help prevent heart disease, lower blood pressure, and reduce the level of triglycerides (fats) in the blood. One preliminary study found that people with high cholesterol who took fish oil and red yeast rice lowered cholesterol levels about as much as people who took simvastatin."

Another study looked at the diet and how it related to blood pressure in 4,680 men and women ages 40-59. All were citizens of Japan, China, Britain and the U.S. The participants of the study were given a survey of their diets and had their blood pressure taken four separate times during the study. The American Heart Association's journal Circulation, published the results which found that people who ate diets loaded with omega-3 fatty acids had slightly lower blood pressure on average than those who ate less omega-3. That result is an amazing find as this study controlled other influences, like salt intake, age, gender or weight.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, epidemiological and clinical studies suggest that consumption of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids contributes to the reduction of cardiovascular mortality through different mechanisms including modulation of cellular metabolic functions, gene expression and beneficial effects on blood pressure.
