New Study Indicates Possible Connection Between Use Of Probiotics And Reduced Risk Of Colon Cancer.

What to know before buying a probiotic supplement.

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 02, 2015 ) Beaverton, Oregon -- Probiotic supplements and foods have been receiving further attention for their beneficial properties. This time it is in the arena of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.

Preliminary studies indicate that a diet rich in probiotic foods and supplements may have an inhibiting effect on the formation of cancer cells within the colon according an EU-funded SYNCAN project.

The vital microbial environment of the entire gastrointestinal or GI tract has been shown to be not only beneficial to the health of the entire body, but critical. The project's findings are expected to show that probiotics can reduce damage to the DNA and by building a strong, healthy digestive tract, the incidence of colorectal cancer will be reduced significantly.

The body contains over 800 different bacteria, only 400 of which have been identified. These control the level of yeasts and unfriendly bacteria in our body. An overgrowth of these yeasts and bad bacteria can lead to bacterial infections which, in turn, may contribute to certain cancers.

The good bacteria also has the ability to bind itself to toxic bile salts and reduces the production of inflammatory molecules. And, although it is important to maintain a volume of good bacteria in the billions, it is even more important to increase the biodiversity of bacteria.

For the GI tract to do its job properly there must be a wide variety of friendly flora colonizing the gut. Certain strains of bacteria support and compliment other strains, adding to the efficiency and cancer fighting properties.

Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium are two probiotic strains which contain lactic acid bacteria. This lactic acid bacteria is know to create a more acidic PH state in the GI tract, preventing damage by bad bacteria.

Diet, stress, and environmental toxins can have a detrimental effect on the health of friendly bacteria, which, when healthy, can consume about 2.2 pounds of bad bacteria and yeasts as the body rests peacefully through the night.

When there is imbalance and illness in the gut, there is illness within the body.

The results shown through the SYNCAN project dovetail with findings from many other studies that show similar results. By taking a high quality, multi-strain probiotic supplement the GI tract is better able to defend against harmful health issues.
