Red Wine To Benefit PCOS - Increased SHBG Revealed In Recent Study

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 24, 2014 ) Seacliff, SA -- While red wine has long been recognized to provide benefits for the cardiovascular system, such as reduced risk for atherosclerotic disease development, new benefits of red wine were revealed that may help Polycystic Ovary Syndrome sufferers, timely for the current PCOS Awareness Month.

A recent study published in Endocrine Abstracts showed that red wine increases sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The risk of low-circulating SHBG includes cardiovascular, metabolic syndrome and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome signs and symptoms.

In the study, researchers investigated whether using red wine could increase SHBG levels to a higher degree in comparison to other substances. Treatments were conducted using red wine, white wine, and ethanol. C.S. Lopez et al in Endocrine Abstracts revealed, "red wine treatment increased sex hormone binding globule (SHBG) when compared with white wine and ethanol treatments."

This research has potential benefits for the 17% of women of reproductive age who suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a potentially devastating hormone disorder, with low levels of sex hormone binding globule being a common finding in sufferers. This information is timely for this month's PCOS Awareness Month, as natural means to improve symptoms are much needed.

"Low circulating sex hormone binding globule has been linked to increased levels of free, active hormones, such as testosterone, related to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and it's signs and symptoms like infertility, irregular cycles, acne and excessive hair growth," says David Harwin, spokesman for Distinct Wine Accessories. The new study sheds light on the potential scope that red wine covers in cardiovascular and metabolic health.
