A Beautiful Yoga Mat For Hot Yoga-Gain Poise & Balance

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 12, 2014 ) Brisbane, Queensland -- Over two decades ago a pilot study was done on 14 women with moderate disability due to MS conducted by the Rutgers School of Health Related Professions, and a specially designed yoga program for these women found that their overall quality of life was lifted as well as their mental and physical.

Since then more studies have been done, as much of the feedback from yoga being utilized as a form of exercise for people with MS was not conclusive enough for some in the Health Related Professions, so a specialized yoga program for MS patients, incorporating mind, body and spirit was planned.

After the 8 week trial those who had participated were able to walk for short distances and for longer periods of time, had better balance while reaching backwards, fine motor coordination and able to go from sitting to standing. Pain and fatigue lessened along with an improvement in bladder control, concentration and vision.

"Yoga is not just exercise, it is a whole system of living," said Fogerite, an associate professor, who, along with Kietrys, will present the results on September 26 at the Symposium on Yoga Research at the Kripalu Institute in Massachusetts. "The panel of experts who advised us on the trial wanted to make sure that we provided a fully integrated program that included philosophy, breathing practices, postures, relaxation and meditation."
The original ladies who participated in the study practiced techniques for 90 minutes, twice a week for two months teaching them how to relax and focus.
They are very hopeful that even though Yoga is not being widely prescribed for people with MS that it could be the very thing that brings help and hope to the sufferers of this dreadful and debilitating disease.
As well as getting better the camaraderie amongst the women was amazing and helped them throughout even though they were all at different levels of the disease there was that closeness of having something in common and getting stronger arms and necks at the same time.

Fogerite stated "More than 2.3 million people – two to three times more women than men – throughout the world are diagnosed with this disease which can cause poor coordination, loss of balance, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue and problems with memory and concentration".
Surely that is a lot of families who are impacted with this problem so it would seem that anything that eleviates the pain and can give better mobility to these precious people, even something as simple as owning a yoga mat and bag and doing any type of exercise they can manage would be a huge boon to their lives.
