(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 16, 2014 ) Glasgow, UK -- Research has shown that extra virgin coconut oil could help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. According to researchers from the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland, coconut oil can stop the growth of bad bacteria that can go on to cause dental caries.
During the study, the team discovered that coconut oil was effective at fighting a number of different strains of bacteria including Candida Albicans and Streptococcus mutans; both of these forms of bacteria are often found inside the mouth.
As well as proving effective at treating bacterial and yeast infections, virgin coconut oil was also found to be a much healthier alternative to antibiotics. Many experts have warned that antibiotics are becoming less effective at treating common infections, and coconut oil doesn't have the negative effects that some medications do.
Dr. Damien Brady acted as lead researcher on the study. Dr. Brady believes that in years to come coconut oil could become a key ingredient in dental health products due its effectiveness at fighting bacteria; he suggests that it might be used in toothpastes and mouthwashes.
At a conference to present the findings of the research, Dr. Brady explained that finding alternative ways of fighting microbial infections was important as antibiotic resistance continues to growth.
There are plans for further research, which will study coconut oil and the role it can play in controlling other types of infections.
The Athlone Institute of Technology research is just one of several studies that have shown coconut oil could play an important role in the prevention of tooth decay.
