(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 03, 2014 ) Ontario, CA -- In partnership with other federal and international agencies, FDA and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) conducted examinations at US-based international mail facilities, where many packages with prescription drugs invade the US, and found that most of the examined packages contained unapproved prescription drugs that had been part of the online purchasing.
"When consumers buy prescription drugs from outside the legitimate supply chain, they cannot know if the medicines they receive are counterfeit or even if they contain the right active ingredient in the proper dosages," FDA Office of Enforcement and Import Operations Director Douglas Stearn said in an agency news release.
Stearn added that consumers have little or no legal recourse if they experience a reaction to the unregulated medication or if they receive no therapeutic benefit at all. He also emphasized the credit card fraud, identity theft, or computer viruses that it might bring to the consumers.
According to the preliminary findings, certain drug products from abroad such as estrogen, bimatoprost, tramadol, sildenafil citrate, insulin, tadalafil and human chorionic gonadotropin (hcg) were found to be on their way to US consumers. The group of inspectors detained 583 packages at the mail facilities in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.
Meanwhile, law enforcement, customs and regulatory authorities from more than a hundred countries, worked together to identify the makers and distributors of illegal drug products and medical devices that used the internet to sell their products and remove these products from the supply chain.
According to Philip J. Walsky, acting director of the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations said that many illegal online pharmacies use slick website templates and empty guarantees to convince US consumers that the inexpensive drugs they sell were the exact same prescription drugs that are dispensed in the US. The 1,975 websites that sold prescriptions illegally made the internet service providers, domain name registrars and other organizations notified.
The collaborated effort dubbed by Operation Pangea VII at mail facilities concluded that in the detention or seizure of 19,618 packages containing medicines purportedly from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. These packages contained suspected counterfeit drugs from other countries such as India, China, Singapore, Mexico, Malaysia, Laos, Taiwan, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
FDA highly advise people to be aware of buying medicines online, although they assure that they will continue to leverage their resources and strengthen their national and international partnerships to shed light on these internet-based fraudulent activities.
