(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 30, 2014 ) Bangkok, Thailand -- Disorders and congenital facial deformities are commonly found in developing nations around the world and usually need to be addressed surgically in multiple stages. Traditionally the the patients must undergo a minimum of two or three operations, which can significantly prolong the patients overall treatment and recovery time. It is possible to treat TMJ and jaw correction surgery simultaneously but requires very careful planning and surgical proficiency in both surgical fields.
According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Over the past 12 years, CAD and CASS (computer-assisted surgical simulation) technology have been integrated into most maxillofacial surgical applications, including for treatment of facial and jaw deformities along with TMJ reconstruction. A recent article appeared in the March 2014 issue of the Dental center blog that presents an promising new treatment protocol using CASS technology in helping to treat facial deformity cases that require a multi-stage treatment that combines reconstruction with custom fitted total joint prostheses.
The article, was titled Orthognathic and Maxillofacial Surgery Utilizing Computer Simulation, describes this new protocol and compares it with the traditional approaches in the past. Dr. Denise Sakchai Roberts, from the Dental Center of Thailand, predicts that using the new CASS technology for patients with TMJ and facial deformities would eliminate any excessive downtime or additional surgical needs by eliminating the "traditional" extra steps required by the oral surgeons to manually set the patients lower jaw into position using the stereolithic model. "The new CASS model helps save a lot of time and also helps improve our surgical accuracy for our patients," said Ms Sakchai
Maxillofacial and Oral surgeons are specialists who primarily treat conditions, birth defects, injuries, and/or the aesthetic aspects of the teeth, jaw, face or mouth including the nose, cheeks, chin and bones near and around the eyes. Maxillofacial surgeons also help replace lost or damaged teeth with dental implants, reconstruct facial area due to trauma, remove cancerous tumors and perform Aesthetic surgery.
