Lipitor Lawsuits Claim Drug Can Cause Type 2 Diabetes

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 15, 2014 ) New York, NY – ClassAction.org is alerting consumers to reports that Pfizer, Inc. is facing lawsuits alleging that its popular cholesterol-lowering drug can cause Type 2 diabetes. The lawsuits claim that Pfizer knew since at least 1996 that Lipitor could put patients at risk for diabetes, but failed to adequately warn the public about this risk. In 2012, the FDA requested that Lipitor’s label be updated to include the risk of increased blood sugar levels after two studies suggested a link between the drug and Type 2 diabetes; however, plaintiffs claim that the updated warnings on Lipitor’s label still fail to warn patients that they may be at risk for developing diabetes. In light of these allegations, the attorneys working with ClassAction.org are offering free consultations to anyone who used Lipitor and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. To see if you may be owed compensation, visit http://www.classaction.org/lipitor-lawsuits today and fill out the free case review form.

In May 2013, the British Medical Journal published a study that found Lipitor, above any other statin, put patients at the highest risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Particularly, the study found that there was a 22 percent increased rate of the disease in women using Lipitor when compared to women who were treated with a different statin. In addition, two studies from 2012 had similar findings. A study published in the Lancet medical journal found that patients using statins, such as Lipitor, were nine percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who did not use a statin. Another study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that post-menopausal women were more likely to develop new-onset diabetes after using statins to treat their high cholesterol.

Following the studies from 2012, the FDA announced that it would be updating the labels for all statins, including Lipitor, to include the risk of increased blood sugar levels. The agency noted that it “continues to believe that the cardiovascular benefits of statins outweigh these small increased risks”; however, lawsuits against Pfizer allege that these risks are “unreasonably dangerous” because high blood pressure and diabetes can put patients at risk for additional problems, including heart disease, blindness, neuropathy and kidney disease. As there is no known cure for Type 2 diabetes, patients with the disease require life-long monitoring.

Whether you have suffered from Type 2 diabetes after using Lipitor, or you are acting on behalf of a loved one, the attorneys working with ClassAction.org may be able to help. If you have questions about your legal rights, or would like to see if you may be able to file a lawsuit for compensation, visit http://www.classaction.org/lipitor-lawsuits today.
