January is National Blood Donor Month- Cochran Firm Disability Lawyers Reports

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 07, 2014 ) Dothan, AL – The American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) states that just over 9 million people donate about 15.7 million units of blood in the United States. This barely keeps up with the demand of about 41,000 units per day. Blood is provided to needy patients across the country every two seconds on average. Although almost 40% of the population is eligible to give blood, only about 10% do on an annual basis.

It is pretty common knowledge that blood donations are both needed and save lives so why don’t more people donate? Probably the number one reason is fear of needles. Most people have an aversion to pain and volunteering to have what is perceived to be a painful procedure is intimidating. The truth is that most people do experience pain ranging from a sharp pinch to a small stab, but the pain subsides quickly, normally within just a minute or two. The pain is a small sacrifice to save a life!

The second largest reason people fail to donate is lack of time. We live in a busy society and are always hurrying to get somewhere. (Just ask police who write speeding tickets on a daily basis.) However, a donation can be made during an hour lunch break leaving plenty of time to grab lunch and be back to the workplace. A typical donation only takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on how quickly the blood flows.

Some people are also afraid of contracting a disease while giving blood. Gaining a disease while donating is all but impossible. Donation workers are trained in preventing transmission of disease by cleaning and providing sterilized equipment for each donor. New, sterile needles are used for every donation.

Other people are afraid of feeling weak or being unable to complete their day after giving up blood. In reality only about 10% of a person’s blood supply is removed. Very few people feel weak. Donors may be requested to not engage in strenuous activity for a few hours and to drink more fluids, but within 24 hours the fluid in the bloodstream is replaced.

One other major excuse is that people feel they will be turned down due to an illness or life experience they may have had. To ensure the safety of donated blood criteria has been established for certain medical conditions such as hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, illegal drug use and a few other conditions and situations. However, this should not stop a person from calling or viewing the requirements online to see if they are actually eligible (http://www.giveapint.org/information/donate_eligibility.php). To a person’s surprise, their illness may not be on the list and they can help save lives.

Donating blood is a simple procedure, does not take a long time and is safe. Each unit of blood can be broken down into parts and can save up to three lives. The 30% of eligible people to donate who do not each year should take a few minutes and donate to help their friends and neighbors in a time of need.
