Brick And Mortar Businesses Lose More Business To Black Friday Sales On Amazon

Shoppers Go Crazy For Black Friday Sales

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 29, 2013 ) Philadelphia, Pa -- Every year, Amazon takes a larger share of the overall sales during Black Friday. Even with the creation of Cyber Monday, brick and mortar stores are continuing to see decreased sales volume as a result of lost sales to Amazon. The reasons for this increased preference for shopping via ecommerce are numerous.

While Black Friday is without a doubt a yearly Thanksgiving ritual for many families, there are many other factors influencing sales besides just the deep discounts. In recent years, attending Black Friday at many retail stores has become a dangerous outing in which fights and quarrels between shoppers are virtually guaranteed. In 2008, the dangers of Black Friday came to a head with a reported death at a Walmart store in New York.
Shopping online at stores such as Amazon on the other hand provide a much safer environment to shop without all of the hassles of lining up hours before opening and fighting off other shoppers. Amazon also offers deep Black Friday discounts on almost all items in their store. According to the Huffington Post, "Amazon sells pretty much everything you could ever need. Thus, you may not be surprised to learn that seemingly every conceivable gift is on sale at Amazon for Black Friday."

In addition to offering deep discounts, Amazon also has the infrastructure to offer free shipping to all customers on orders over $35. With the average consumer expenditure on Black Friday reaching $423 in 2012 (Statistic Brain), this means that the majority of Black Friday shoppers will be eligible for free shipping and even expedited shipping if they are Amazon prime members. Furthermore, a slew of other websites such as this Amazon grill brush coupon site have popped up just in time for Black Friday offering exclusive discounts on Amazon products.
Research has shown that just to compete with ecommerce retailers like Amazon, brick and mortar stores are continuing to cut into their margins. Prices are getting lower each year, stores are staying open longer, and more and more money is being spent on advertising. A prime example is Walmart who expects to report under 8% net income margins in the U.S. for the 4th consecutive year after all expenses are accounted for. While these rates can be absorbed by a large box retailer like Walmart, the decrease in margins is unsustainable for the average small business retailer.
