(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 24, 2013 ) PHOENIX, ARIZ. - Reports indicate that the deadly drug, krokodil, may have made its way into the United States from Russia.
The drug is said to have similar affects as that of heroin to users, and has become popular as it is easily made and smuggled. The drug is made by combining codeine, gasoline, lighter fluids, and paint thinner, alcohol, and other poisonous ingredients.
In Arizona, two people are suspected of using the drug, which rots the skin from the inside out, yet health care providers at the Banner Good Samaritan Poison & Drug Information Center in Phoenix have yet to identify if the drug has been used as it has not been tested.
Krokodil was first reported being used in Russia in 2003, according to the Journal of Addictive Diseases. The drug is nearly 10 times cheaper than heroin and is said to give the same euphoria effect to users.
It was given its name due to the fact that it eats users from the inside out, while rotting the flesh and leaving bone and muscle tissues exposed. User’s skin will appear green and scaly like a crocodile, in Russian, krokodil.
A common type of death for this drug is the loss of skin, while users may also die from infection, gangrene, and the deterioration of blood vessels the drug is injected into.
