(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 08, 2013 ) Dothan, AL—Cancer treatment can be extremely expensive; decimating savings even if the patient has insurance. Below are financial options available in Georgia for cancer patients.
In 1937 several doctors petitioned the State of Georgia requesting the establishment of a fund to help pay for cancer treatment. Every year since then the state has allocated funds for this purpose. In fiscal year 2012 over $6 million were reimbursed to 223 people. Only 381 applications were received. Any uninsured or low-insured and low-income resident of Georgia can apply for assistance, but there are stringent rules that must be followed. First, the facility at which the treatment will be provided must be a participant in the Cancer State Aid (CSA) Program. The patient must apply for the program through that healthcare provider. Application should be made immediately upon diagnosis as the fund may help cover diagnostic testing and workup expenses. The fund will not reimburse for cancer treatment that was completed prior to submission or receipt of the application nor will it pay for co-payments, insurance deductibles or any other expense.
In addition to the CSA program, cancer patients may have other financial alternatives open to them. The state Medicaid program pays some medical bills for low income people. Elderly patients should also make sure they are covered by Medicare.
The Partnership for Prescription Assistance has created a database of over 400 programs and 5,000 medications available for low cost or no cost assistance. The Partnership can be contacted at 1-888-477-2669. Some pharmaceutical companies also provide assistance. Below is a list of companies and contact information:
