Microfiber: Extrusion For Biotextiles

What Do You Want From Your Microfiber Towel?

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 19, 2013 ) Little Rock, Arkansas -- The wonders of microfiber continue to make advancements outside of the familiar industrial and consumer cleaning sector. The uniqueness of these remarkable fibers are garnering the attention of the medical community, as well. However, the fibers are being examined for an advanced purpose that has and will have a positive and measurable effect on the medical industry.

Boyce Henry, director of product development for Savy Industries, the producers of Big Daddy's Microfiber Towels, recently noted that, "Microfiber yarns are the critical building blocks of bio-textiles for the medical community. These specialized fibers are intricately woven into the bio-textile components that are used in many of today's implantable medical devices. These fibers were actually developed for sutures decades ago. After that, fiber technology progressed to the first cardiovascular grafts using bio-textiles just a few years ago. As fiber technology and the fabrication capabilities of these materials continues to be realized, many new applications will evolve for the field of medicine."

Currently, the preferred method of fabrication is through a process called melt spinning. A polymer is heated to melting point and then continuous fiber strands can be produced by extruding the polymer through a spinneret. This method is currently more economical, scalable and is accomplished without the need for solvents.

Future textile based, implantable medical devices will rely on specific technologies addressing each performance or task needed. One focus for improving medical microfiber technology centers around extrusion using a unique melt-spin process known as ARmicron high-definition micro-extrusion (HDME). Using nano- and micron-sized fibril components to form precise, unique structures within a fiber, intricate polymer domains within a fiber can be achieved because of the level of detail and definition that can be obtained using the HDME process.

Microfiber technology is changing our lives in many ways. It is not only proving itself as a superior cleaning tool, but is also proving useful in the field of medicine and is even being looked at as a fabric charging mechanism for our mobile devices.
